From Chief Karl Lieb

As we head into the holiday season, filled with cold-weather activities, festive gatherings, presents, and holiday travel, here at the Salt Lake City Fire Department, we would like to share a few reminders to help keep your home and family safe. A little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring a calm and enjoyable holiday season.

Winter Weather Safety Tips

Keep heating equipment safe

  • Maintain at least three feet of space around space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves.
  • Plug heaters directly into the wall rather than into extension cords.
  • Never warm up a vehicle inside a garage, even if the door is open.
  • Keep outside furnace and dryer vents clear of snow and ice.

Prepare for winter travel

  • Pack a winter emergency kit for your vehicle with blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, and a small shovel.
  • Let someone know your route and expected arrival time.
  • Slow down on snowy or icy roads.

Stay safe outdoors

  • Dress in layers and limit time in extreme cold.
  • Be cautious around frozen ponds and lakes—ice thickness can change quickly.
  • Stay hydrated! Even though it’s cold outside, you still need to maintain hydration throughout the winter.

Christmas Tree Safety Tips

If you choose a real tree

  • Select the freshest tree you can find; needles should stay on when touched.
  • Make a fresh cut at the base before placing it in water.
  • Water the tree daily. A dry tree can ignite very quickly!
  • Keep your tree at least three feet away from fireplaces, heat vents, and other heat sources.

If you choose an artificial tree

  • If your tree is pre-lit, check cords and bulbs for damage before plugging it in.

Lighting and decorations

  • Avoid overloading outlets or connecting multiple extension cords.
  • Turn off all lights and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.

From all of us at the Salt Lake City Fire Department, thank you for helping keep our community safe. We wish you a warm, peaceful, and happy holiday season!
