This month, as we swing into the holiday season, the Salt Lake City Fire Department would like to remind you of a few tips to help keep you, your family, and your home safe.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fires are three times more likely to occur on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year. In 2023, there were 1,446 home cooking fires reported nationwide - 388% higher than the daily average. Given those statistics, it’s essential to take extra precautions when preparing your holiday meal.
Safe Cooking Tips:
Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Never leave the stove unattended.
Keep children out of the kitchen to ensure their safety.
Never leave home while food is cooking. Keeping an eye on your meal can make all the difference.
Keep hazardous items such as knives, hot liquids, and matches out of reach of children.
By following these simple but effective safety practices, you’ll help ensure your holiday meal is enjoyed safely around the table, not the fire engine.
