Salt Lake City Fire Department is proud to recognize National Fire Prevention Week from October 5–11. Since 1922, this nationwide campaign has focused on educating the public about fire and life safety, sharing easy-to-follow tips and best practices to help keep families safe. Each year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) leads the initiative with a new theme to raise awareness about current fire risks.
This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” While lithium-ion batteries power many of our everyday devices and make life more convenient, they can also pose serious fire hazards if not used or disposed of properly. To help keep you and your loved ones safe, the NFPA recommends three simple steps to “Charge into Safety”:
Buy Only Listed Products – When purchasing items that use lithium-ion batteries, look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA to ensure the product meets established safety standards.
Charge Devices Safely – Always use the charging cord that came with the device and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Charge on a hard, stable surface, avoid overcharging, and unplug the device or remove the battery once charging is complete.
Recycle Batteries Responsibly – Never throw lithium-ion batteries in household trash or regular recycling bins. To find a safe recycling location near you, visit call2recycle.org.
Join us in celebrating National Fire Prevention Week at our Fire & Life Safety Event on Friday, October 3, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at Station 7 (273 North 1000 West). Enjoy food, giveaways, and fun for the whole family—meet first responders, explore fire trucks and safety equipment, and even say hello to our rescue dogs!
