Can you believe it’s already August? That back-to-school buzz is in the air, and it’s the perfect time to make sure your kids are set up for a safe school year—whether they’re walking, biking, getting dropped off, or hopping on the bus.

Salt Lake City Fire Department wants to share a few friendly reminders to help keep your family safe all day long - on the way to school, during the day, and coming home.

Walking to and from school

  • Stick to sidewalks when you can, and if there aren’t any, walk facing traffic so you can see what’s in front of you.
  • Heads up, phones down: No texting, scrolling, or earbuds while walking. Stop somewhere safe if you need to check your phone.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street, even in a crosswalk. Don’t assume they see you!

 Biking, scootering, or skating

  • Gear up! Helmets are a must. Pads and reflective gear or lights help too, especially in early morning or evening light.
  • Limit headphone use – it’s always best to hear what’s happening around you.
  • Stop and walk your bike or scooter across intersections and crosswalks.

Driving in school zones

  • Eyes on the road. Texting or fiddling with the music can wait!
  • Watch for kids on sidewalks, in crosswalks, or even darting between cars.
  • Slow it down in school zones. Speed limits are there for a reason!

While at school

  • Have an emergency plan. Talk about what to do and who to contact in different situations.
  • Make sure your child has important numbers saved or written down in their backpack.
  • Set a safe, consistent pick-up and drop-off spot.
  • Use a family code word that only trusted adults know—it’s a great safety layer.
  • A mini first-aid kit in their backpack can be super handy.
  • Ask your school about emergency drills and talk through them at home. This can help your child feel more engaged and confident.
  • And don't forget to connect with other parents. Having a network helps everyone stay informed and prepared.

Whether your child is heading into kindergarten or gearing up for college, these small habits can make a big difference. The Salt Lake City Fire Department is here to help your family stay safe and confident all school year long.
