What better way to start the new year than by setting yourself and your family up for success with these helpful winter safety reminders?
Winter Weather Tips:
Know the signs of hypothermia
Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Signs may include intense shivering, cold and pale skin, fatigue, slurred speech, confusion, and blue or gray lips. If hypothermia is suspected, call 9-1-1 immediately. Get the person out of the cold and wrap them in a warm, dry blanket while you wait for help.
Keep a cold-weather emergency kit in your car and home.
A good baseline for an emergency kit includes:
Cold-weather clothing
Non-perishable food items
Water
Medications
First aid kit
Frozen pond safety
Avoid walking or playing on frozen bodies of water unless they are designated and maintained ice skating rinks.
Hydrant clearing reminder
When clearing snow from your driveway or sidewalk, ensure snow and debris are also cleared from the nearest fire hydrant to allow quick access in an emergency.
Preparing for winter storms
Keep extra flashlights and batteries available in case of a power outage.
Have blankets and warm clothing readily accessible (don’t forget your pets).
Keep backup batteries and power banks charged so you can access your phone.
If using a space heater, keep it at least 3 feet away from flammable items.
Never use ovens, grills, or generators to heat your home.
Bring pets indoors during cold weather.
With these winter safety tips and tricks, you and your household will be set up for success for a great winter season. We hope you stay safe and take care.
